He had a special way of leaving people with words of encouragement, often saying, 'Keep a song in your heart and a smile on your face.'
Robert L. Johnson, age 81 of Paducah, also known as “Bobby Settle,” passed away on October 10, 2026, at Baptist Health Paducah. He was born on August 26, 1945, in Paducah. Robert spent his early years in Paducah and attended Paducah public schools. He later earned certification as an auto mechanic from West Kentucky Community and Technical School, building on a strong work ethic that would carry him through many chapters of his life.
At a young age, Robert earned a special place in Paducah’s history as a Western Union Bicycle Messenger. Affectionately known as “Speedy” for his remarkable ability to navigate the streets of Paducah faster than the motorized delivery trucks, he became a familiar sight throughout downtown. Robert holds a special place in Paducah’s history as the bicycle messenger who delivered the city’s final Western Union message by bicycle, marking the end of a memorable era. Later in life, he worked in the oil fields of Louisiana and also served on riverboats as a deckhand, traveling up and down different rivers. These experiences spoke to his willingness to work hard and meet life with steady resolve.
Robert was also a proud veteran of the United States Army. He served in the 69th Engineer Battalion Construction Division during the Vietnam War and also spent one year serving in Germany. Following his active military service, he continued his commitment to his country as a member of the United States National Guard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Johnson, with whom he shared 44 years of marriage, and by his brother, William A. Johnson.
Robert leaves behind those who will remember him with love and gratitude, including his sister, Barbara Pitway of Paducah; his cousin, Ronnie Boswell of Paducah; and his partner in his later life, Roberta Pangman. May their memories of him bring comfort in the days ahead and keep close the many moments they shared with him.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 14, 2026, at Fooks Cemetery, 926 Mt Moriah Rd, Benton, Kentucky 42025 with Bro. Jonathan Goodman officiating.
Robert will be remembered for a life marked by service, hard work, and enduring ties to Paducah. He had a special way of leaving people with words of encouragement, often saying, “Keep a song in your heart and a smile on your face.” Those simple but meaningful words will forever be a cherished reminder of Robert and the joy he wished for others.
